MP Ruff – Remain vigilant for Energy Scams
06 August 2024
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound – Alex Ruff, Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, issued the following statement:
“In recent weeks, my office has been made aware that there are unsolicited calls being made to residents of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound trying to sell energy rebates claiming an affiliation with my office.
“To be clear, as your Member of Parliament, my office will never call you to sell you energy rebates.”
Natural Resources Canada provides the following advice on Energy Scams:
Unsolicited phone calls or door-to-door visits—Remain vigilant!
NRCan has not approved any third parties to make unsolicited contact with homeowners to register for or participate in the Canada Greener Homes Grant. The Government of Canada, NRCan and its family of brands (ENERGY STAR, EnerGuide) never solicit over the telephone, or by email or go door-to-door asking to enter Canadians’ homes to inspect, sell, or rent heating and cooling products. EnerGuide home energy evaluations are performed by licensed service organizations only at the request of homeowners.
Refuse any in-home inspection from a door-to-door salesperson
Never sign anything
Do your research and double-check everything
Know your weaknesses
Avoid giving out personal information, online, over the phone or in person
Report suspected scams
Scams can be reported to your local police service and the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/report-signalez-eng.htm.
